There is a shortage of housing that is affordable that is available to a growing urban population. There is plenty of demand for “market-rate” or luxury housing, which is most profitable for developers, but there is a constrained supply of “affordable” and “workforce” housing compared to demand for those. Add to this, the utility cost of standard building stock, and there is mounting financial pressure from living costs for low- and middle-income segments of the population.
Two of the most powerful solutions to the problem, especially when used in combination, are Passive House and prefabrication. This discussion will describe the benefits to architects, builders, and developers of both of these solutions, before providing more specific detail on the Build SMART panelized wall system. We will cover the anatomy of a wall, layer by layer, the quality control process, how it goes together in the field, and the design process. There will also be a case study financial analysis.
