Arlington, VA, October 28, 2019 – North Carolina Building Performance Association (NCBPA) and Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) today announced a new partnership to educate architects, builders, code officials and building professionals about the importance of building envelope energy efficiency and the benefits of installing polyisocyanurate (polyiso) insulation as total solution for North Carolina residential and commercial construction projects.
Polyiso is a rigid foam insulation used in more than 70 percent of commercial roof construction and offers a continuous insulation solution for commercial and residential wall assemblies. As one of North America’s most widely used and readily available building products, polyiso is a cost-effective insulation option for reducing building energy use and improving the overall service-life of roofs and walls.
“North Carolina’s new 2018 commercial building code includes a variety of new requirements impacting the building envelope that can be cost-effectively achieved using polyiso insulation,” said Ryan Miller, NCBPA Founder and Executive Director. “This partnership will help us educate architects, builders, code officials and many others about the proper uses of polyiso insulation in residential and commercial, new and retrofit construction projects.”
In addition to working together to help stakeholders meet and exceed code requirements, the associations will collaborate on research and education surrounding energy code exemptions introduced over the past several years through the North Carolina State Legislature that allow large new construction and retrofit commercial building projects to ignore all energy code requirements established by the state.
“North Carolina is an important market for our industry and the state’s construction sector has the opportunity to deliver both cost-effective and energy-efficient building projects. Unfortunately, the state’s minimum energy code requirements have been weakened, or all together abandoned, leaving building owners and businesses to face increased energy bills for years to come,” said Justin Koscher, PIMA’s President. “Polyiso insulation helps buildings meet and exceed minimum code requirements while also providing a positive financial return on investment. Whether exempt from energy code requirements or not, building with continuous insulation is a best practice for energy, health, durability and cost savings.”
Through the new partnership, NCBPA and PIMA will work together to:
- Educate industry professionals and code officials on the proper uses of polyiso insulation.
- Educate industry professionals and code officials on North Carolina’s new energy code standards, including specifying building envelope plans in construction documents, meeting continuous insulation prescriptive requirements, and envelope commissioning.
- Host events that provide continuing education and new learning opportunities.
- Highlight and host tours of North Carolina businesses involved in the polyiso industry.
- Host an educational track at NCBPA’s Southeast conference taking place August 24 – 26, 2020 in Raleigh.
